“The Dunnett Carnival of Venice” was a conference held in Venice from 19th to 23rd September 2016, in association with the Dorothy Dunnett Society (www.dorothydunnett.org). Dorothy Dunnett was a highly regarded historical novelist, renowned for her writing and her research, who set part of her “House of Niccolò” series in Venice. During the conference, the delegates, who were based at the Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli, had meetings at the Don Orione in the Aula Magna and the Sala Goldoni, and visited the locations mentioned within the books.
Most of the delegates stayed at the Don Orione, with its blend of clean, comfortable rooms within the quiet calm of the ancient former monastery. The Don Orione is perfectly located within a 15 minute walk of St Mark’s Square, and within 5 minutes of the Zattere (where boats could collect the delegates for trips out to the islands of the Lagoon, and to the Arsenale). The local San Trovaso Restaurant provided excellent meals. The staff at the Don Orione could not have been more helpful, and our delegates had a marvellous time at this beautiful conference centre in this wonderful part of the magical city of Venice”
