SLOWFOOD PROJECT- CE MUNICIPALITY OF VENICE 15th MAY 2019

On May 15th, the Municipality of Venice invited the local group of stakeholders of the Slowfood-CE project to participate in a meeting at the Don Orione Artigianelli Cultural Center: the day was aimed at improving the capacity of local actors to enhance the heritage cultural gastronomic of the territory, but above all it was aimed at sharing objectives and collecting ideas for the realization of the pilot action of Venice, that is a great city Festival on local products and gastronomy, whose first experimental edition will be held on 9 and 10 November 2019 . The meeting, convened and coordinated by both technical and institutional representatives of the Municipality of Venice (with the support of Slow Food experts) had a very positive outcome: about thirty stakeholders (producers, restaurateurs, associations, hotel schools, in addition to representatives of the Slow Food Condotte of Venice historic center and mainland) had the opportunity to exchange ideas and create synergies to think and realize together the first edition of this event. The Festival, provisionally named “Venice Food Days”, received official support from the Tourist Destination Management Organization, the body that the Municipality of Venice established to improve collaboration between public and private entities in order to promoting sustainable and quality tourism. Furthermore, this Festival can act as a driving force for private and public investments in the future, so that it can be sustainable even after the end of the project.

The IV International Conference on Nuclear Structure and Dynamics NSD2019 will be held in Venice at the Don Orione Artigianelli Cultural Center from 13 to 17 May 2019. The conference is a follow-up to the three previous conferences held for the first time in 2009 in Dubrovnik (Croatia), continued in 2012 in Opatija (Croatia) and last 2015 in Portoroz (Slovenia), and is part of a series of conferences dedicated to more recent theoretical and experimental progress in the field of nuclear structure and reactions. The NSD 2019 Conference will maintain this tradition, with the aim of providing a broad discussion forum that promotes the exchange of ideas and collaboration between researchers with experimental, theoretical and phenomenological backgrounds.

Sant’Erasmo: Venice vegetable garden – Purple Artichoke Festival May 12th 2019

Sant’Erasmo is an island in the Venice lagoon, half an hour by vaporetto from the Fondamente Nove (Line 13). To explore it we recommend you a walk through its characteristic vegetable fields, vineyards and orchards, surrounded by the breathtaking lagoon scenery.

Sant’Erasmo purple artichoke

From the sixteenth century, the island is known as the “Venice vegetable garden“, due to its large concentration of vegetable gardens and cultivated fields, which for generations have provided fruit and vegetables to the historic center. Among the many local crops, artichokes undoubtedly stand out above all. The variety grown on the lagoon took its name from this island, Sant’Erasmo purple artichoke. The right season to taste this tender, fleshy and elongated vegetable, is from the end of April, when the first small apical artichoke buds, called castraùre, are ready to be picked off. Harvest continues until the end of June.

A typical product of the Lagoon area

Today there are very few artichoke growers in the lagoon and they suffer more and more the competition of the products coming from other parts of Italy, passed off as Sant’Erasmo artichokes and sold at lower prices. For this a Consortium has been established, followed by the institution of a Slow Food Presidium, which have brought together the growers of the lagoon islands in order to distinguish and add value to the authentic local artichoke grown in Venice.

Sant’Erasmo Purple Artichoke Festival

The best way to discover this tasty typical product of the lagoon is taking part to the Sant’Erasmo Purple Artichoke Festival, an annual enogastronomical kermesse held on May 12th on the island of Sant’Erasmo. For the occasion, at the Torre Massimiliana, tastings will be organized and you will have the possibility to buy local products directly from producers.
