Biennale Architettura and other exhibitions in October

There are so many reasons to visit Venice and these beautiful autumn days are an invitation to go for a wander, choosing the most hidden itineraries. Whatever the reason, if you want to plan a trip to the city, we advise you to plan your trip by choosing in the Tourist Report the less crowded days.

Venice is always a cultural laboratory and it is in the art that it reveals its best features.

Here are some suggestions. Visit #Freespace ,the 16th International Architecture Exhibition until Nov. 25, 2018. In addition to the national pavilions of Giardini and Arsenale, there are many venues scattered around Venice, in historic buildings, churches and museums. When visiting the island of San Giorgio to see the works exhibited for the Biennale, take your time to visit also the exhibition dedicated to the M.V.M. Cappellin Glassworks and the Young Carlo Scarpa. Since you are there, do not forget to climb the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore to enjoy the wonderful panorama and visit the Abbey. If you love the greenery, do not forget a tour of the gardens and the Borges Maze and the art collections.

AUTUMN IN VENICE

A tourist experience is not complete if you do not have the experience of local and wine specialties. Cuisines are a mix of tangible and intangible elements that contribute to the cultural values of a place.
Do you want to discover secret places and suggestions to understand the culture of food and  wine in the Venetian territory and its metropolitan area? On November 11th in Venice,  San Martino is celebrated both on the mainland and in the historic city with many events for children and their families: animations, music, workshops, food stands keep the tradition alive. The typical dessert of this festival  has the shape of St. Martin on horseback, flailing his sword , and is decorated with  icing sugar or covered with melted chocolate and garnished with candies. Pumpkin, new wine, chestnuts are the ingredients of many traditional dishes. You can buy these products from local producers in the metropolitan area, at the markets or from the agro-food companies. While wandering in the outskirts of Venice, do not miss a visit to the Venetian villas to better understand the art and treasures of the Serenissima Republic in the mainland.

TINTORETTO IN VENICE

Venice celebrates, until January 2019, the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Venetian painter, Jacopo Tintoretto, (1519 – 1594), hosting not only a major exhibition at the Doge’s Palace but several other events in different venues.

The young Tintoretto traces with an exciting path, his first decade of activity, an extraordinary period of experimentations and stimuli, deeply renewing the painting of the lagoon, in a moment of great changes – at the Gallerie dell’Accademia until 6th January 2019.
Venice during the age of Tintoretto, a precious exhibition of ancient artifacts and . copies of the clothes worn by the characters portrayed by Tintoretto, on display in the museum’s halls, will help to reveal the historical and environmental context in which Tintoretto conceived his masterpieces – at the Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo until 6 January 2019.

Discover the works of Tintoretto in  Cannaregio Dorsoduro, San Marco, Castello, San Polo and Santa Croce and in the island of San Giorgio Maggiore: you will discover all the places in the city that contain the author’s works: at  the Church of Madonna dell ‘Orto, you can admire the Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple (1556), the Last Judgment and the Making of the Golden Calf (1559/60), at the Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore you can appreciate the Last Supper, 1592-94 , the Fall of Manna, 1592-94, and the Deposition in the Sepulcher, 1592-94.

VENETIAN GARDENS FESTIVAL

From Friday 5 to Sunday 7 October, in the historic center of Venice, the Venetian Gardens Festival is a unique opportunity to visit the most secret  courtyards and gardens that are open only on special and very rare occasions.  Guided tours (in Italian), readings and convivial moments  are organised by Wigwam Club Historic Gardens.

This year’s edition is focused on trees and some special events let you visit and discover “the paper mulberry and the intrusive nettle tree” of Palazzo Nani Bernardo garden, “the ancient cypresses” of the garden and cloister of the Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia, “the auspicious pomegranate” of the Garden of Palazzo Grimani ai Servi, the olive grove next to the tomb of Tintoretto at Madonna dell’Orto, the vineyard of San Francesco della Vigna,  the centuries-old mulberry trees in the park of the San Clemente Palace Kempinski, the magnificent pittosporum in the garden of Palazzo Pesaro Papafava.

All visits are by appointment only and booking is compulsory. The suggested donation is 10/20€.

IN THE GREEN

Venice is a surprisingly green city: its historic centre is scattered with public parks – precious and unexpected spaces to be enjoyed, like the Napoleonic Gardens and the Biennale, the Royal Gardens and the Papadopoli Gardens, ideal for a rest and refreshment – and historic gardens belonging to institutions and museums. Do not miss the visit to the Mystical Garden of the Barefoot Carmelites, near Santa Lucia railway station; the gardens and cloisters of San Francesco della Vigna, in Castello; the garden and cloisters of the Redentore, in Giudecca; the park and the cloisters of San Giorgio Maggiore; the garden and the cloister of the monastery of San Lazzaro degli Armeni: places of meditation and peace, surrounded by greenery. The garden of Palazzetto Bru-Zane can be visited when the premise is open to the public for concerts and events. Walk down the garden of Ca ‘Rezzonico and enjoy a unique glimpse of the Grand Canal from the garden of Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti. Unusual is The Nasher Sculpture Garden where works works from the permanent collections are exhibited and the back garden of Carlo Scarpa in the Querini Stampalia Foundation. In the mainland visit the Parks and the Woods of Mestre, following the itineraries in perfect harmony with the environment.

If you’re interested in visiting the oasis, dunes and the pine forest of San Nicolò and the wetlands of Santa Maria del Mare, nothing better than the cycling path along the coast of Lido and Pellestrina, arrinvg  by vaporetto ACTV. Remember that bicycles are forbidden (even when only lead by hand) in Venice city centre
