“International Conference on Terahertz emission, Metamaterials and Nanophotonics” TERAMETANANO-2017 (TMN-II) 28th May – 2nd June 2017

The TMN-II conference gathered physicists studying a rather wide variety of areas in the field of nanostructures, nanophotonics and metamaterials, in a broad range of wavelengh, going from the visible to the terahertz.

The presentations covered the optical or electrical properties, both from an experimental and theoretical point of view, of a large ensemble of nano-scale systems, ranging from two-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures, nano-cristals, Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, graphene and Kagome BCN structures, Dirac/Weyl semi-metals and topological insulators. Prospects for applications were discussed, including for instance in the fields of nano-photonics, spin-tronics, valley-tronics. Plasmonic, all-dielectric and hybrid metallic/dielectric nano-antennas can lead to localized nano-chemistry for highly enhanced surface sensing, while quantum dots embedded in chiral photonic crystal structures opens various important applications in optoelectronics, quantum information technology and chiral synthesis.

At the micro-scale, Meta-Material (MMs) represent the next level of structural organization of matter. The structural elements of a MMs are called meta-atoms, small building blocks or unit cells engineered in large 1D, 2D or 3D arrays. The possibilities of combining various micro-inclusion shapes, such as resonant spheres, rings or wires and even various small electronic components are infinite and so are the possibilities for the artificial Metamaterial behavior. The application possibilities of Metamaterials are found in industrial sectors like Information and Communication Technologies, Space, Security and Defense.

On the edge between nano and micro, the development of efficient coherent sources for terahertz (THz) emission is a subject of intense activity for both applied and fundamental research. The terahertz frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum, in the far infrared, has a broad number of potential applications across the physical, medical, biological, environmental and astronomical sciences. For instance, THz quantum cascade lasers THz QCLs can be used in the development of micro-fluidic sensor chips, MEMS based resonators, self-mixing imaging systems, coherent three-dimensional imaging, near-field/super-radiant microscopy and as local oscillators in satellite-based instrumentation for Earth observation and planetary science. Another topic of interest lies with the strong coupling regime between electronic transitions and THz photons confined in semiconductor microcavities. The resulting new “polariton” excitations display important interest both for fundamental physics as well as for applications to new light sources.

JULY IN VENICE

In summer Venice is very hot, so why not visit the city in the colder hours and choose the most refreshing itineraries during the summer heat? For example a walk in the natural oasis WWF Dune degli Alberoni or the Nature Reserve of Ca’Roman or a day at the beach in Lido.
Lido is one of Venetians favourite destinations in summer. Its beaches are charming and elegant and the seabed slopes down gradually thanks to the San Nicolò and Alberoni barriers, so children can take a dip safely. The shape and colour of the many beach huts vary according to the resort, and are nowadays equipped to guarantee a holiday in complete comfort. For those who want to enjoy the sunshine and the sea in peace and quiet, the sandy beaches of San Nicolò, Alberoni or Murazzi are ideal.

July is also the month of festivals: do not miss San Giacomo da l’Orio Festival in mid-July in the Sestiere of Santa Croce. And the month of traditional feasts as The Redentore Feast, which commemorates the end of the plague of 1576 and is an important and typical feast that is still celebrated for its special significance for Venetians on July 15-16.

Like every summer Venezia Jazz Festival will take place with concerts throughout the Metropolitan City until July 29 and Biennale Teatro from July 25 to August 12 at Teatro alle Tese and Teatro Piccolo Arsenale. Do not forget that Palazzo Ducale will be open until 11 pm (last admission 10 pm) every Friday and Saturday until October!

SUMMER IN VENICE : TRADITIONAL FEASTS

If you want to celebrate like the locals do, be sure to take part to these traditional festivals in your summer visit to Venice.

Featuring someting for everyone, in an almost country atmosphere – whether you’re into stories, music, theatre, video, cinema, food, charity and lotteries, religious functions, regattaS, activities for children –  here’s our month-by-month guide to some of the best experiences coming in the summer to live the city’s water soul, like Venetians do. VENICE BY NIGHT

Night is the best time to enjoy the magical of Venice: the crowd of tourists are gone or are resting, tired, after long walks. The reflection of light off the surface of the canals and the way light shines from the windows give a different dimension, more intimate. The sounds change: the plashing of water, the echo of the footfalls and of the voices in the empty spaces, show the city’s true dimension. Enjoy your night far from the places bound by tradition and the beaten track. Do you want to find out what a museum is like at night? Museums by the moonlight: from May 19 on Fridays and Saturdays, The Doge’s Palace is open until 11 pm. On Saturday, June 17th Artnight, the night of art will keep more than hundreds museums and institutions, private galleries, bookshops and exhibiting spaces open until late. Venice most-famous night  is the night of the Redentore. on July 15th. Once the fireworks are over, the boats head for the Lido where, in keeping with the tradition, people wait the sunrise. And if you want experience Venice at dawn in a different way, you can join the 5.30 run on July 14th.
