AUTUMN IN VENICE

Autumn can be a wonderful time to visit Venice: the crowds of the summer have gone and Venice shows its more authentic version, the Venetians’ everyday city, still plenty of things to see and do.
In October, the first Sunday celebrates Festa del Mosto – the must from the harvesting of wine grapes – in Sant’Erasmo. Visitors can join the locals to taste the island’s best produce and specialities.
7-9 October is Garden festival a special occasion for walking in colourful fall red-gold-orange gardens, often closed to the public.
Thousands of running entusiasts will run the Venicemarathon on 23rd October starting from Stra along the Riviera del Brenta, finish line at St.Mark’s Square.
Do not miss the Biennale Architettura (until November 27) and the 500 years of the Venice Ghetto, the new exbitions and the theatrical season (Check our Calendar of events).
On 21st November  the Feast of Madonna della Salute is celebrated, with a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal to the Salute Church and special masses.
It is a very Venetian feast. Even today, thousands of people make the pilgrimage to pay homage to the Virgin and to light a candle asking her to keep them in good health. The procession of believers passes stalls selling sweets, coloured balloons and toys. Special foods are prepared just for this day.

In the mainland, in the islands and in the historic centre a rich calendar of events for Le città in Festa-Autumn.

If you are looking for new perspectives so to discover the true soul of the city, autumn is the best choice.

DUNNETT CARNIVAL VENICE 19th-24th SEPTEMBER 2016

“The Dunnett Carnival of Venice” was a conference held in Venice from 19th to 23rd September 2016, in association with the Dorothy Dunnett Society (www.dorothydunnett.org).  Dorothy Dunnett was a highly regarded historical novelist, renowned for her writing and her research, who set part of her “House of Niccolò” series in Venice. During the conference, the delegates, who were based at the Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli, had meetings at the Don Orione in the Aula Magna and the Sala Goldoni, and visited the locations mentioned within the books.

Most of the delegates stayed at the Don Orione, with its blend of clean, comfortable rooms within the quiet calm of the ancient former monastery.  The Don Orione is perfectly located within a 15 minute walk of St Mark’s Square, and within 5 minutes of the Zattere (where boats could collect the delegates for trips out to the islands of the Lagoon, and to the Arsenale).   The local San Trovaso Restaurant provided excellent meals.  The staff at the Don Orione could not have been more helpful, and our delegates had a marvellous time at this beautiful conference centre in this wonderful part of the magical city of Venice”
